SPRING NEWSLETTER 2018

Spring has sprung! Mother’s Day approaches, birds are singing, and Branch No. 52 in Stonewall is getting ready for Decoration Day. This will be held on Sunday, June 3. We will form up at the Legion between 1:00 and 1:15 p.m. and march off at 1:30. The ceremony at the cenotaph will begin at 2:00 p.m.
Another rite of spring – the Friday Night Barbecue – will begin on May 25, unless we get a volunteer group to run it on the Friday of the Long Weekend. Barbecue will be from 5:30 until about 7:30, overlapping the regular Friday Night Meat Draw which has ticket sales beginning at 6:30.
Over the past few months we have been having a Saturday Afternoon Meat Draw on the last Saturday of each month, at 3:00 p.m. These have been well-attended and will continue on May 26 and June 30. Come out and win some meat! And have a nice social afternoon with other Members.
Crib winds up for the season on Thursday, May 10. See you all again in the fall! Thanks to the organizers for all their time and effort – these events do not convene themselves you know!
At the General Meeting on May 8, 2018, the Membership voted to discontinue the sale of cigarettes in the Club Room. There is very little demand; product is more likely to go stale than to be sold, and it is a drain on resources to keep inventory on hand to no purpose. There are many other nearby venues for the purchase of cigarettes.
As is customary, in June the Branch 52 executive will ask the membership for the power to conduct business over July and August without General Meetings. If you want to get to another General Meeting before September, you had better come out to the one on June 12. See you there!
Chase The Queen is on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. At last report the pot was at $2402.50 – not too shabby! Come out and try your luck, and spend some time with your neighbours and fellow Members.
Jim Gray is doing a fine job of Visiting those who are Sick as well as sending cards to those who are ill or bereaved, hence his title of director of Sick and Visiting. If anyone is aware of a Member who is sick or has passed on, please contact Jim at 204-467-9696.
Now when you call the Branch at 204-467-2261 you will be speaking with Chelsea, as our long-time office manager Jane has retired – good luck in future endeavours Jane, and welcome Chelsea.

Is it Spring Yet?

The sun is in the sky longer now, and there is even a bit of warmth in it. Surely it must be spring? No, I don't think so. But we will not let that dampen our enthusiasm -- join us in the Club Room on March 17, St. Patrick's Day, to enjoy the musical stylings of The Marvels, from 7:30 till midnight.

We are adding another Meat Draw to our schedule -- ANOTHER CHANCE TO WIN! This one will be on the last Saturday of each month, starting at 3:00 p.m. There will be three drawings, and for each drawing 5 tickets cost $5.00. It's a good chance to get out and visit with friends, have some fun, and take a chance on winning some meat! Of course our regular Friday Night Meat Draws will continue, except on March 30 which is Good Friday (Club Room closed).

November Newsletter 2017

Looking out my Manitoba window on October 26, 2017, it certainly looks like winter out there! Although this snowfall will soon melt – at least I HOPE it will – it is a reminder that we need to start getting ready for the winter season of Legion events.

  Visit our website at www.RCLBranch52.com

Poppies – help with the Poppy Drive if you can, and if you can’t, at least please buy and wear a Poppy!
Legion Week is November 05 to November 11. As always, we will have our annual Vets’ Dinner and Dance on the Saturday prior, that is, November 04. Tickets are available from the Club Room; call 204-467-2261. Cocktails are at 5:30; dinner at 6:30; dance in the Club Room at 8 with Sonny and the Hurricanes, a country band.
Other events in November include the annual Craft Sale put on in the Hall by the Seniors Group. Come out and do some Christmas shopping, visit with friends, and enjoy a hot lunch.
Don’t forget that November 30 is the final day of Early Bird Pricing for your membership renewal. You don’t want to miss out on the savings.   Regular members pay $40.00, while those over 70 years of age pay $35.00.
Remembrance Day will be celebrated in the Legion Hall at 10:45 a.m. on November 11. Volunteers to set up the stage and chairs are welcome; call 204-467-2261. Although the service starts at 10:45, the event is always well-attended, so early arrival is advisable if you want a seat.
At the November meeting, on November 14, we will be taking Nominations for the 2018 Executive, with elections being held at the December meeting.
And speaking of December, we have a lot of events planned for that month.  On December 02, everyone is welcome to join us for Breakfast With Santa from 9-noon.
There will be a Bake Sale in the Hall spanning two days – Friday, December 08 and Saturday, December 09.
One of our most popular events is the annual Christmas Eve Afternoon in the Club Room, with food and prizes. This year it will be on Saturday, December 23 from about  pm onward; the Club Room closes for the holiday at 6 pm. It will remain closed on December 24, 25 and 26. See you again on December 27!
New Year’s Eve will be celebrated in the Club Room with Halo Jump, starting at 8 pm. There will be a cover charge of $5.00, and finger food will be provided.
Come out on Wednesday nights for Chase the Queen! Take a chance! Win some cash! Have some fun!

For better communication, Dominion Command is requesting all Members’ email addresses; simply send an email to   dminfo@legion.ca. Another new thing coming down the pipe is an improved Member Application Form. Previously, the routine was to fill in the Application, pay your dues, and attend an initiation in order to become a full-fledged Legion member. Now the Initiation portion of the process has been included on the Application form, so you never have to attend at all! Of course we would all like to see you come out to the Legion and socialize, but the initiation just does not fit everyone’s schedule. This way, you can more easily become a Member.

Summer Newsletter for Branch No. 52 Stonewall

The weekend of August 18-20 is our biggest community celebration of the year, Quarry Days. We have a number of events planned. The Parade sets off from the arena at 10:15 on the Saturday; we will have a float in the parade. Of course everyone is welcome to come on out to our centrally located Legion Hall to watch the parade go by. And that is not even our first event of the weekend! On Friday, Aug. 18, at  6:00 our Beer Gardens and BBQ will be open. Later on, you can groove to the musical stylings of Hallo Jump in the Club Room. Then on Saturday morning, join us for pancake breakfast in the Hall from 8 a.m. till noon.  Our Beer Gardens and BBQ open at noon, and will be available until about 7 p.m. The annual “street dance” and Beer Gardens begin at 8 p.m.; you need to pay to get into this one, folks, and you must have valid ID proving that you are 18 years of age or older. The entertainment will be provided by the ever-popular DJ, Chris Hofer. Bright and early at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning the pancake breakfast is up and running again in the Hall, until noon when the Beer Gardens and BBQ open for the afternoon, with DJ Tony Letkeman.
We would very much like to put on a barbecue every Friday afternoon, from about 5:30 until 7:30 or so. In order to do this we need VOLUNTEERS! Feel free to sign up to help out with one (or more) of these events. The sign-up sheet is at the bar in the Club Room. If we have no volunteers, we will have no barbecue!
Dominion Command is requesting all members’ email addresses; simply send an email to   dminfo@legion.ca. Another new thing coming down the pipe is an improved Member Application Form. Previously, the routine was to fill in the Application, pay your dues, and attend an initiation in order to become a full-fledged Legion member. Of course we would all like to see you come out to the Legion and socialize, but the initiation just does not fit everyone’s schedule. This way, you can more easily become a Member.
President’s Report.  Cde. T. Willliams reports that Chase the Queen recently paid out at over $11,000.00, and the Bingo Lucky Seven went at over $2700.00. Come on down to our weekly events and take a chance on winning big!  Cde. Williams wishes to thank everyone who helped at Decoration Day. A thank you is also extended to Cdes. B. and P. Armstrong for the donation of the poppy picture in the foyer.
In other administrative business, patrons are advised that there will be a slight increase in drink prices in the Club Room, to reflect increased costs. Effective July 1, 2017, it will cost you 25 cents more to wet your whistle. It has further been decided to revisit the Hall rental rates for community events such as funerals, etc. It has been demonstrated that what we collect is not enough to pay the janitor to clean up the space after the event, and get it ready for the next event. I believe that at one time the events under this umbrella were put on by Members, and were set up and cleaned up by those same Members. Now the lines have become somewhat blurred, with other folk wanting to use the Hall at “mates’ rates” but not doing the set up and clean up that “mates” formerly did.
